INDIA

The India Documentary Project began in 1974 when I went to India with my wife to meet her family for our first anniversary. Three months of travel convinced me that the perception of India as a third world under-developed nation was going to soon change. I wanted to record the transition to a modern industrialized society. Even I had not con-sidered how quickly this was going to happen. Images from this series are often made with a 4x5 view camera in rural villages in Kerala State and include visits back to photograph the same places and people over an extended period. While the individual images may not reflect this concern with the passing of time, the nature of the extended bodies do.
